When our clients first approached us, the main focus was on their ensuite renovation. The plan for the main bathroom was straightforward, a simple strip out and rebuild with everything remaining in place. However, as often happens in design, one thoughtful question completely shifted the direction of the project:

“What else could we do?”

That question sparked a creative process that took this bathroom renovation from basic to fully
custom, resulting in a space that is both functional and visually striking.

Tile Selection: Creating Flow and Visual Impact

Tile choice plays a significant role in shaping the atmosphere of a bathroom. While the original design leaned towards wood look tiles, we shifted direction during the tile selection process.

We selected a versatile collection in a consistent colour palette that offered multiple tile sizes. This allowed us to:

• Use subway-style tiles within the recesses to create visual detail.
• Transition to larger tiles on the main walls for a clean, seamless flow.
• Maintain the same colour across walls and floors, giving the bathroom a cohesive, contemporary feel.

This combination of textures within a unified colour scheme was a design risk, but the outcome added depth, elegance, and interest to the space.

Modern Lighting for Depth and Atmosphere

Lighting is often what transforms a bathroom from practical to luxurious. For this project, we replaced traditional LED spotlights with LED strip lighting, which provided a continuous, streamlined effect.

The strip lighting accentuated the varying depths of the recesses, highlighting the textures of the tiles and creating subtle contrasts even within a single colour palette. The result was a bathroom with warmth, dimension, and atmosphere perfectly suited for modern living.

Finishing Touches: Introducing Gunmetal Fixtures
To balance the light tiles, we incorporated gunmetal taps and accessories. These darker elements introduced contrast without overwhelming the overall design. The gunmetal finish added sophistication and ensured the bathroom felt contemporary yet timeless.

What began as a basic bathroom upgrade evolved into a fully customised renovation that far surpassed the original plan. By rethinking the layout, carefully selecting tiles, integrating modern lighting, and finishing with bold fixtures, we created a bathroom that is both practical and luxurious.
