KDBi Small Kitchen Winner

Design Brief

Creating a dream kitchen in just 6sqm.

This kitchen is for a young professional couple, with no children. The space has many restrictions that Impala Designer Andrew Wright had to face, including the hot water service, butler’s sink, which the client loved and lack of size. This kitchen is very small situatedin a 2 bedroom 1960s apartment block. The brief was to design the kitchen in a fun, modern-traditional style, (Shaker/Hamptons). The client didn’t want just another “white traditional kitchen”.

Design Statement

At just 6.62 sqm, this kitchen is very small and difficult to place all the items in practical positions, whilst still supplying ample bench and storage space.

The room is only 1.8m wide, to overcome these constraints the benchtops were designed wider than standard to create move depth and workspace room. The client didn’t want to fill the room with cabinets, so Andrew used open shelves to give a feeling of extra depth. The clients also wanted this to be an interesting kitchen along with being very practical for them to use as couple.Keeping this in mind bench space was given on either side of the cooktop and the sink, so two people could work comfortably. Andrew also usedthe open shelves,to create interest and perceptive the traditional rangehood canopy allowed vision of the back wall, making the room feel larger.

The room still has plenty of storage with multi drawer/pantry, appliance cabinet’s and lift-up microwave door. These storage features keep the kitchen very neat and streamlined. Large drawers also add to the storage space. The integrated drawer dishwasher also allows extra storage space below and adds to the continuous look. The contrasting colours add interest, style and depth.

Fitting this kitchen into such a small space with all necessary appliances and storage requirements was very challenging and the end result is both pleasing to the eye, colourful and yet practical.
